Georgetown is the hardest place to park in Washington, DC for one structural reason: it has no Metro station. Every visitor to M Street, Wisconsin Avenue, the Waterfront, Georgetown University, and MedStar Georgetown hospital arrives by car, bus, bike, or on foot from Foggy Bottom — and the curb absorbs all of it, on narrow historic blocks that were laid out before cars existed.
That means Georgetown's parking problem is not a shortage of signs. It is four overlapping clocks — meters, RPP Zone 2 time limits, weekday rush-hour tow lanes, and seasonal street sweeping — stacked on blocks where hydrants, alleys, and driveways already consume half the legal curb.
1. RPP Zone 2 — the 2-hour clock
Residential Georgetown is DC Residential Permit Parking Zone 2 (Ward 2) — a different zone from Adams Morgan and U Street, which are Zone 1. Without a Zone 2 sticker you get 2 hours on a posted block, Monday–Friday, 7 AM – 8:30 PM.
The blocks where visitors get caught most are the streets one row north of the shopping strip — N, O, and P Streets NW between 29th and 35th — where drivers park "just for lunch" and come back at hour three.

2. Meters on M Street, Wisconsin Avenue, and the Waterfront
The commercial spine — M Street NW, Wisconsin Avenue NW, K Street NW (Water Street, under the Whitehurst Freeway), and Prospect Street NW — is metered Monday–Saturday, 7 AM – 10 PM. Sundays and DDOT-observed holidays are free at the meter.
The Georgetown-specific trap is the time limit. Many M Street and Wisconsin Avenue meters cap you at two hours regardless of how much you pay in the app, because the goal is turnover for the retail strip. Paying more does not buy more time, and a valid payment does not protect you inside a rush-hour lane.
Meter ticket: $25–$50 depending on the zone. Overtime beyond a posted limit is a separate violation from failing to pay.
3. Rush-hour tow lanes
Weekday peak restrictions run 7–9:30 AM and 4–6:30 PM. In Georgetown they hit the corridors that carry Virginia and upper-Northwest commuters:
- M Street NW — curb lanes convert to travel lanes in the peak direction. This is a tow, not a ticket.
- Pennsylvania Avenue NW east of 28th — same pattern feeding downtown.
- Canal Road / Whitehurst Freeway approaches — restricted stopping with fast-moving traffic and almost no shoulder.
- Key Bridge and 34th St NW approaches — short but strictly enforced no-stopping segments.
A tow means the ticket plus a tow fee plus storage — the most expensive parking mistake in the neighborhood.
4. Street sweeping
Most Georgetown residential blocks are swept once a week on a posted weekday morning, usually in a two-hour window, and often one side of the street on one day and the opposite side on another. Sweeping signs are seasonal — many read "March 1 – October 31" — so the first week of the season generates a wave of tickets on blocks that were legal all winter.

Georgetown vs. Foggy Bottom vs. West End
These three West-of-downtown neighborhoods get grouped together constantly, but they park nothing alike:
- Georgetown — Zone 2, no Metro, heavy visitor and retail demand, short meter limits, garages are the realistic weekday answer.
- Foggy Bottom — Zone 2, but anchored by GWU, the State Department, and GW Hospital. Metro-served, so demand is institutional weekday traffic rather than weekend retail.
- West End — Zone 2 and mostly residential, so it functions as the permit-heavy buffer between Georgetown and Dupont. Frequently used as walk-in parking for Georgetown, which is exactly why RPP is enforced there.
Practical takeaway: if Georgetown curbs are full on a weekend, walking in from a legal Foggy Bottom or West End block is often faster than circling M Street — but those blocks are also Zone 2, so the same 2-hour weekday clock applies.
